How to make a booking

We are open 09:00 to 17:00 Tuesday to Thursday; 09:30 to 16:30 Friday. We do not open on Mondays, weekends or Bank Holidays.

We will also open until 21:00 for one Thursday evening each month for a trial period from May until October 2022 (the last one being in September).

Thursday evening opening will be on the following dates: 5th May, 9th June, 7th July, 4th August, 8th September.

From 7th June 2022 there will be no restrictions on the number of visitors or the number of sessions per visitor, per week. We will still advise you to book in advance to avoid disappointment, particularly for the use of computers and original documents.

Demand for bookings is likely to be high which means that we will not always be able to accommodate your request. Please be prepared to consider alternative dates/sessions as a result. Thank you.

How it works:

You may book up to two sessions of up to three hours per week, either separately or as one whole day.

Sessions will only be made available up to three weeks in advance.

Bookings are available for up to 7 people as follows:

  • 5 places to look at original documents. You will need to pre-order up to 6 documents in advance at the time of booking.
  • 1 place to look at original documents and to use Microfilm/fiche and a computer. You will need to pre-order up to 6 documents in advance at the time of booking.
  • 1 place to use Microfilm/fiche and a computer.

Access to catalogues and the library is open to all. Use of shared items will be at your own risk.

Each booking is for one person only.

You can eat and drink onsite. Use of shared seating areas will be at your own riskPlease see our Facilities page for details on what refreshment options are available.

You will not be able to bring anyone with you unless they also book a session.

You can order up to six documents in advance. Please take a moment to use our online catalogue before you make a booking in order to find the references of documents you wish to look at. 

Please bring a face-covering as we will encourage you to wear it whilst you are in the BRO. 

Please let us know as soon as possible if you wish to cancel a booking, as this will open it for someone else to take.
