Seal of Cardinal Reginald Pole, the last Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury

Seal of Cardinal Reginald Pole, the last Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury

Date: 1557 | Reference: D/A1/132/80

This is one of the best examples of Pole’s seal. It is a pointed oval and depicts the scene of the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170. Becket is seen kneeling in front of an altar, while from his left four knights attack him. To Becket’s right is his cross-bearer, attempting to protect his master. The royal arms below the praying Becket reflect Pole’s royal connections.

As a young cleric, Pole worked towards Henry VIII’s divorce of Catherine of Aragon. He left England in 1532 and became a member of the Spiritualialongside Michelangelo and Vittoria Colonna. After the death of Pope Paul III in 1549 Pole almost became Pope – in one ballot, he was two votes short of the requisite majority.

Pole returned home after Edward VI’s death and became Queen Mary’s ArchbishopHe died only 12 hours after her during an influenza epidemic.

‘I found it very difficult to choose a favourite document from all the ones I have repaired over the decades. This seal stands out because of the intricate and complex design compressed into a small space.
