Letcombe WI’s Golden Effort

The outside of this scrapbook was just as important as the inside to Letcombe WI. The wheat presumably pays homage to the National Federation of WI’s rural origins and has been sprayed gold - perhaps in honour of the Golden Jubilee.

Into the Future

Stratfield Mortimer WI included a few pages in their 1965 Golden Jubilee scrapbook predicting what life would be like in the area in 2015. They include drawings by children of a train and a house of the future; a mother’s request for a swimming pool and a teenager’s suggestion that the open area called the Fairground should become a sports facility. Whilst the area did not become a leisure centre, it does now contain tennis courts and recreational space.
